EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has aired a major Ben Mitchell twist following his exit.

Last week, Ben was arrested and threatened with extradition to America when a credit card fraud offense resurfaced.

Ben was last shown breaking down, following an emotional final encounter with husband Callum where the copper promised he’d be waiting for Ben once he completed his sentence.

However, Monday’s (April 1) episode suggested that Callum could be waiting a very long time for Ben’s release given his latest legal setback.

The episode saw Sonia Fowler discussing her fertility journey in the Vic with Whitney Dean, when Callum interrupted them to share some bad news about Ben.

Ben’s mother Kathy was sitting at the bar as Callum broke down in tears over the details of his phone call with family lawyer Ritchie Scott.

“He didn’t fight [the charge],” Callum explained. “The warrant and everything has been exercised. He flies [to the US] tomorrow.”

Kathy broke down, as she realised Ben really would be imprisoned in the US. She shared a tearful hug with Callum as they tried to get to grips with the sad news.

Cast member Max Bowden paid tribute to EastEnders fans when his final scenes aired last week, thanking them for the “continued well wishes and support”.

“Well guys, it’s that time! It’s been one hell of a ride! Thanks for taking Ben to your hearts and allowing my version into your lives,” he wrote on social media. “I had an amazing five years at @bbceastenders and learnt a hell of a lot about myself and the craft I love so dearly.”

Max already has a new acting job lined up, as he’ll be touring the UK later this year in a 30th-anniversary stage production of the play Birdsong.

EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
