Emmerdale has been hit with nearly 1,000 complaints by viewers after watching what some branded a ‘sickening’ scene in the ITV soap. Viewers of the long-running show have been struggling to watch as an abuse storyline plays out between newlyweds Tom and Belle King.

Tom’s behaviour has progressively worsened in recent months. However fans of the ITV soap know that the first concerning scenes aired back in October when he popped the question to Belle and didn’t take her turning him down very well, assuming it meant she didn’t love him, and a brief move left her bleeding on the floor.

Since they tied the knot, Tom’s coercive control over his new wife has only escalated with him putting a tracker on his wife’s phone, forcing them into owning a dog and setting up a ‘pup cam’ in their home, secretly causing problems for her in her new job at Take A Vow, and is also slowly isolating her from her family.

More recently, viewers saw Tom turn the tables on Belle. After she pushed him in the village in view of Marlon Dingle, Rhona Goskirk and Vanessa Woodfield, he made out he was the victim and that Belle had been struggling with her mental health, leading her to leaving their home and going into a facility.

However, she quickly returned home upon news their dog, Piper, was ill and may have to be put to sleep, unawre it was Tom causing the dog’s unusual, slowed behaviour. Viewers watched as the abusive character used a syringe to poison Piper in an effort to either see Belle or get her home.

Before administering it, Tom says: “Don’t worry, this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you. Actually, maybe not.” This resulted in 513 complaints to broadcasting watching Ofcom on May 27 and 363 complaints the following day on May 28.

Following the backlash to the scenes, Emmerdale shared a post on Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter, and reassured viewers that the dog was perfectly fine and there was no harm done to the animal while filming as they shared footage of her being doted on by the show’s stars and crew.

They said “These scenes can be distressing to watch, but we want to remind you that Minnie (AKA Piper) is a very good actor and is always living her best life on set! We can confirm that no harm has come to her whatsoever.”
