The European Athletics Championships are heading into the home straight in Rome, as the continents’ best face off ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris later this summer.
The Italian city plays host for the first time in 50 years, with the Stadio Olimpico the venue for six days of action, which started on Friday June 7.
British interest involves the likes of Dina Asher-Smith, Keely Hodgkinson and Neil Gourley, but Zharnel Hughes, Imani-Lara Lansiquot, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Matthew Hudson-Smith are out of the Great Britain & Northern Ireland squad. Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been forced to withdraw due to injury.
George Mills and Romell Glave got Great Britain on the board with a silver and a bronze respectively, while Calli Hauger-Thackery led Britain to team gold in the women’s half marathon.
Dina Asher-Smith backed that up on Sunday night as she defied a poor start to win 100m gold. Georgia Bell took silver in the 1500m, and Lizzie Bird was moved up to second in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase after initial winner Alice Finot was disqualified.
Elsewhere Jakob Ingebrigtsen stormed to gold in the 5,000m, while Belgium’s Alexander Doom won the 400m ahead of Britain’s Charlie Dobson with a championship record time.
