Farage to make ‘emergency election announcement’ at 4pm

Nigel Farage has said he will make an “emergency” general election announcement at 4pm on Monday, prompting speculation that he may have decided to stand for Parliament.

In recent days, Mr Farage, the honorary president of Reform UK, has expressed regret that he is not a candidate. He has until Friday to submit his name for nomination.

Even some of the most senior figures in Reform were caught unawares by Mr Farage’s mystery announcement, which he had not discussed with them in advance.

At 10.24am on Monday, he posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, in which he said: “I will be making an emergency general election announcement at 4pm today.”

Reform said a press conference would be held in London with Mr Farage and Richard Tice, the Reform leader, without saying what it was about. The announcement was so sudden that members of the party’s campaign team were scrambling to get back to London from other parts of the country in time.

Mr Farage had previously said he would not be standing in the election because six weeks was not long enough for him to successfully campaign to win a seat.

He indicated that he would need months rather than weeks to build a winning campaign, but said he would standing again one day.

He has stood seven times in Parliamentary elections, losing every time, although he was elected as an MEP five times.

Mr Farage and Reform have been contacted for comment.
