Hinton Construction has built itself quite the reputation, and a lot of decks, in just four years of doing business in this area.
Owned by Stockbridge, Georgia native Joseph Hinton, the company specializes in outdoor deck construction, dock repair and home remodels. Hinton Construction’s work in those fields since 2020 has landed the business a spot as a finalist for the 2024 Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.
It all started “by accident,” according to the owner and founder who was raised in a family of construction workers.
“My family had just moved back from Arizona,” Hinton said. “We were traveling to state and national parks when they started shutting them all down for COVID.”
He was visiting his father in nearby Monticello when someone posted to social media that they needed a deck built. Hinton had the knowledge, time and skills to do the work, so he threw his hat in the ring for the job and got it.
“Before we were done with that one, we had two more decks lined up,” he said.
And so a new business venture began. As the company was built up, Hinton Construction started adding remodels, renovations and small additions to its list of jobs. The focus remains in those areas as well as deck construction and dock repair as Hinton’s crew travels predominantly around the lake area to make customers’ dreams come true.
The owner shared that the Small Business of the Year finalist nomination is “a validation of all the long hours, weekends and hard work” his employees put into making the business successful.
Hinton estimates that decks comprise 70% of Hinton Construction’s business in terms of the number of jobs. His field crew of seven can knock out most deck projects within a month. Many can be completed in two to three weeks even though no two are the exact same.
“We don’t get a lot of the basic square- and rectangle-type decks,” Hinton said.”Generally, our customer base wants something unique. I definitely prefer those because we like to have something that’s a little more challenging.”
It’s those unique challenges that keep the job fresh day after day.
“Even though we do a ton of decks, bathroom remodels, and basement remodels, every one is always slightly different,” Hinton added.”Everybody wants their own personal touches. It’s satisfying getting to see the completed project and how happy the customer is. You feel like you’ve accomplished a task versus doing the same thing over and over.”
Four years in as a business owner, Hinton’s hopes for customers who choose his company are the same as day one — for them to be satisfied.
“We want customers to be ecstatic and feel like they got their money’s worth,” he said.”I don’t want them thinking they paid too much or wanting something done differently. I want them to be thrilled and to know that while we were probably not the cheapest guys in town, they got their value and saw the difference in what we offer compared to others who may do it cheaper.”
Hinton Construction rounds out this year’s field of four finalists for the Chamber’s Small Business of the Year. Hinton is one of three first-time finalists along with OrthoGeorgia and Surcheros Fresh Mex restaurant. Edward Jones: Financial Advisor-Crystal Law is a finalist for a third consecutive year.
The winner, along with a few other annual Chamber awards, will be announced at the awards gala Saturday night.
