Hurricane Beryl soaks Jamaica: See photos of the damage after Category 4 hurricane

Hurricane Beryl brushed the coast of Jamaica on Wednesday, bringing floods and damaging buildings and killing at least one person.

Jamaica was battered by Beryl throughout the day Wednesday. The outer bands lashed the Caribbean island nation Wednesday morning before the eyewall brushed the south coast of Jamaica in the mid-afternoon. Beryl was a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph at the time.

The storm was projected to pound Jamaica with 4 to 8 inches of rain with localized amounts of 12 inches. Storm trackers captured waves up to 25 feet as Beryl made its way to Jamaica, which has a population of 3 million people. The center was 45 miles from the capital city of Kingston by mid-afternoon. One woman died after a tree fell on her home, said Richard Thompson, acting director general at Jamaica’s disaster agency. He also said nearly 1,000 residents were in shelters by Wednesday evening.

Beryl made history by becoming the earliest category 4 and 5 hurricane on record and developed from a tropical storm into a major hurricane (winds of 111 mph or higher) in just over 12 hours. It first made landfall Monday on Grenada’s Carriacou Island with wind speeds touching 150 mph.

Forecasters say Beryl is projected to approach the Cayman Islands before moving toward the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday. It is expected to hit the mainland of Mexico late Sunday, and some models have it making landfall again in Texas.
