‘I died and walked into a bright light – and couldn’t believe what I saw’

A man who was declared dead and then revived has recounted his extraordinary experience of ‘walking into the bright light’.

He has shared how the experience profoundly altered his life for the better, describing it as one of the best things to have ever happened to him.

The man chose not to reveal the details surrounding his ‘religion’, but instead focused on the transformative impact of his near-death experience. In a response to a Reddit query asking: “Redditors who have died then been resuscitated, what do you remember seeing? I’ve always been curious. Also, if anyone has any stories about how this changed their perception on religion, please share,” he offered his personal account.

He recounted: “As cliche as it may seem, I saw a brilliant light, and walked into it. Inside, I saw my childhood home and my recently departed grandmother. We talked awhile and then she asked me a question that hit me like a ton of bricks: ‘Are you doing something that matters with your life?'”

Moments after this profound interaction, he was brought back to life, only to be engulfed by panic upon regaining consciousness. He continued: “When I was resuscitated, I came back in abject panic, but the most pressing thing that was in my mind was the realisation that if I had died at that moment, I would have left the world worse off for having me in it.”

He confessed to his past as a difficult individual, acknowledging the negative impact he often had. However, a brush with death became a turning point for him

He reflected: “I decided to change who I was and make life a little kinder. I now work as a counsellor working with traumatised children who have experienced abuse, and I have never been happier. I guess I just needed to die to be reborn.”

On a spiritual note, despite still considering himself an atheist, he shared how his near-death experience imparted a profound lesson. He elaborated: “I had a powerful experience and can’t really explain it, but if I focused on that, I would be wasting my time on daydreams instead of doing what matters: trying to leave the world a little better than when I found it.”

His story is not unique in encountering a ‘bright light’ during a near-death experience. A woman recounts a similar vision after a traumatic incident at the age of 13.

She described her experience after being clinically dead for six minutes following a bus accident, before regaining consciousness in a hospital bed surrounded by her family.

She recounted: “At first it’s nothing. No sound, no wind, no light, no weight. It’s like the weight of the world just disappears and you’re in the deep end of the pool just floating there. No matter how far you reach out, you can’t grab anything. It isn’t cold, it isn’t hot, it isn’t painful. It was absolute nothing, and it felt like I was there for a long time.”

“After a while, there is a flash of light all around me. I felt a small tingle shoot down my body, and I don’t know what happened, but I started falling. Like I suddenly just fell from someplace high up. It’s like, when the school bully comes out of nowhere and just shoves you to the ground, or you trust and fall onto someone and they don’t catch you. It was a long fall, the light faded and I was back into the deep end of the pool.”

Following this, she began seeing her own reflection, aware that she was trying to communicate something to herself, yet unsure of the message. She continued: “There’s another flash and I can hear voices. Then it fades away again. I don’t know exactly what happened, but I woke up in the hospital with my family next to me.”

“The ambulance staff said that I suddenly woke up after they revived me and I walked into the ambulance truck and went to sleep. The first thing I could say was that my nana is proud of our family.”

Reflecting on how the experience affected her, she simply stated: “The weird thing is that I liked it. I felt at peace. There was nothing holding me back and no violence. It was just me and I liked it that way.”
