Britain’s Got Talent winner Sydnie Christmas has spoken about the “soul-destroying” backlash she has faced – amid claims by some viewers that her triumph was a “fix”. The gym receptionist clinched victory on Sunday night with a showstopping performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
She burst into tears as presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly revealed she had scooped the ITV show’s £250,000 prize, as well as a spot on the bill at the Royal Variety Performance. But the 28-year-old has been the subject of vicious trolling online – with some saying were “tell-tale signs” she was always going to win.
The Mirror reports one X user as saying: “Am I the only person who’s noticed that Sydnie Christmas is among the last to perform? They’re definitely fixing it for her to win #BGT”, while a second penned: “Let’s see if they put Sydnie on last to make sure she gets more votes. #BGT #BritainsGotTalent.”
But Sydnie hit back: “[The fix rumours are] just not true. Everything has been genuine and I’ve said my truth so saying it’s not is questioning me.
“There’s nothing that breaks my heart more than to see [the doubt].” Speaking to Metro, she said that the rumours made her “feel really crappy”, adding: “It’s soul-destroying but there’s nothing I can do to change their minds so I’ve had to separate myself. I’d love to speak to them but they are so angry so there’s nothing more I can do.”
She said celebrated her triumph in a Wetherspoons pub because she “needed a pint”. She added on ITV’s This Morning that she “can’t wait” to perform at the Royal Variety Performance for King Charles but said she has “not a clue” what the future holds.
She said: “That’s the exciting bit about it. I’m so ready to just throw myself into whatever opportunity is there for me, that will have me.”
The final, which came after a week of five live semi-finals, also saw performances from the likes of magician Trixy, Taekwondo troupe Ssaulabi, teaching assistant and comedian Alex Mitchell, choir Northants Sings Out, and Japanese skipping group Haribow. Sydnie became the first solo female contestant not performing with a dog to win.
