‘Just when humans couldn’t let her down any more…it breaks your heart’

A severely underweight dog was found abandoned in a Wigan park in the ‘worst case of neglect’ rescuers say they have ever seen.

Luna the pooch had overgrown nails and was covered in fleas when she was discovered tied to park railings on June 5.

The pup was found by a ‘kind’ passer-by who immediately contacted Eccles-based free-roaming animal sanctuary Dogs 4 Rescue, which cares for its dogs on a kennel-free retreat.

It’s thought Luna was once very loved but was rehomed when her owner passed away. It’s believed she has been passed around ever since.

Described as a ‘gentle and beautiful soul’, the pooch is now being cared for by the charity and is being nursed back to good health.

“In all our years, this is the worst case of neglect we have ever seen,” Dogs 4 Rescue said in a statement.

“Usually only seen on cruelty TV adverts or the abandoned hounds in Cyprus, yesterday this poor emaciated dog was abandoned in a field in Wigan. She is now safe in our care.

“She is in a shockingly bad state. She has been starved and is skeletal. She is covered in fleas and her nails are overgrown.

“Just when humans couldn’t let her down any more, she was tied to railings in a park and left. A kind passer-by found her.

“Her name is Luna and she is the most beautiful, gentle soul. She is so frail it breaks your heart and this morning we will be taking her to the vets for a full and thorough check up.

“We know she was once very loved but her owner sadly passed away and she was rehomed. Likely she has been passed around.

“We will be passing information onto the authorities about the last known keeper as this is nothing short of animal cruelty and abuse. Please do not name names in the comments and hamper their investigations.

“Special thanks to Michelle from Greater Manchester Lost Dog Search & Rescue Capture Team C.I.C who heard of her plight and brought her to us at midnight last night.

“If anyone would like to send a small donation to help her you can donate on our website at dogs4rescue.co.uk/donate.

“Luna will only know love from now on and we will do everything in our power to nurse her back to good health.”

Emma Billington, Dogs 4 Rescue founder, said: “In all our years of rescuing, Luna is the worst UK abuse case we have seen. She has been starved, is anaemic and her organs are showing signs of stress.

“Hopefully she has come into our care just in time and she will make a full recovery. Rescues are full to overflowing and it is incredibly hard to find rescue spaces but this level of neglect is simply not acceptable.

“And all the while there are an estimated 250,000 new puppies every year in the UK from so-called responsible breeders.

“But if you add in the backyard breeders and the illegal puppy mills, who knows what that figure rises to when healthy, young dogs like Luna are being abandoned and put to sleep every week because there are no homes for them to go to.

“Rescues across the UK are all saying the same thing – we are full to bursting and it’s getting worse. We really need the help of the public.

“We need people to consider rescuing a dog as their first option rather than funding the breeders who are fuelling this problem by bringing new dogs into the world when there are already so many in desperate need of a good home and a loving family.”
