Kate Middleton cancer update: Princess of Wales ‘making good progress’ as she confirms first public appearance

In Europe
June 14, 2024

The Princess of Wales has issued a moving statement about her ongoing cancer battle and announced that she will attend the Trooping the Colour tomorrow.

Kate, 42, revealed that she has both good and bad days as she undergoes “preventative chemotherapy” for an undisclosed form of the disease.

She has said she has been “blown away” by the well wishes she and her family have received since she announced her diagnosis in a poignant video in March

Admitting that she is “not out of the woods yet”, the Princess said she has returned to light duties and helping her three children with her schoolwork when she feels well enough.

The Princess said that she is looking forward to King Charles’s official birthday parade, which will be her first public appearance since Christmas Day last year.

It is believed that the Princess will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the King’s Birthday Flypast, which brings the event to a close.

While this is a hopeful message from the Princess, she stressed that she still has months of treatment ahead of her and will therefore unlikely to return to her previous duties anytime soon.

The Princess of Wales has released a statement confirming her attendance at Trooping the Colour tomorrow and providing an update on her cancer treatment.

It reads: “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.

“My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.

“I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.

“I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.

“Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.”

Tomorrow will mark Kate’s first public appearance since Christmas Day last year.

Royal source claims Kate doesn’t want to ‘upstage’ King at Trooping the Colour

17:00 , Emma Guinness

Following the news that the Princess of Wales is “considering” an appearance at Trooping the Colour, a source close to Kate has claimed she won’t appear to avoid upstaging the king.

Should the Princess appear, it will be her first time in the public eye since Christmas last year. She stepped back from her role in January because of ongoing health concerns.

The source told the Daily Beast: “Kate’s appearance will steal King Charles’s show. She won’t take [the] risk to anger her father-in-law.

“It would be wonderful, of course,” they added, “but more than slightly bizarre given that she bowed out of the Colonel’s Review.”

The cost of Trooping the Colour

15:30 , Emma Guinness

A freedom of information request (FOI) has given an insight into the potential cost of this year’s Trooping the Colour.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) revealed that they spent £59,662.70 on the 2021 event on transport, fuel, horse food and temporary accommodations.

However, the total was much higher as this is not every cost incurred by the parade, which marks the King’s official birthday.

A much more significant £28 million was set aside to cover the event and the then-Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, which included four days of public events. An additional eight million was spent on security for the event by the Metropolitan Police.

Statista reports that the Sovereign Grant for this financial year is £86.3 million – the same amount allocated in 2022 and 2023.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘relieved’ to miss Trooping the Colour

14:30 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly “relieved” to miss this year’s Trooping the Colour.

According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are no longer working royals, were not invited to the King’s official birthday parade.

This was also reportedly the case last year, despite it being Charles’s first Trooping the Colour as King.

Royal expert Tessa Dunlop told the Mirror of last year’s event: “Prince Harry is not coming to the King’s inaugural Trooping of the Colour, when for the first time since 1986 Britain’s monarch will be mounted taking the salute.

“Whether Harry was invited or not (probably not why would you invite someone who was not going to attend?) is a moot point. Harry is no longer a working royal.

“Trooping the Colour is a job for our working royals. The key word there is ‘job’. Saturday will see them dressed up and on parade, doing what they do best, providing the military, which depends on its hierarchical structures, with a symbolic figurehead.”

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis ‘likely’ to appear at Trooping the Colour

13:24 , Emma Guinness

A royal expert has claimed that the three Wales children “really enjoy” the Trooping the Colour and are likely to appear at tomorrow’s event.

This comes amid a difficult year for the family, which has seen Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis largely kept out of the public eye as a result of the Princess of Wales’s ongoing cancer battle.

Of the family’s appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony, royal author Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight: “They’ve been up there several times now.

“They are always impeccably behaved, often entertaining, and they always seem to enjoy it. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if William decides to bring them.”

New reports have claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a secret home in the UK before moving into Frogmore Cottage.

The home was allegedly worth £2.5 million and located in the Cotswolds, with the couple reportedly signing a two-year lease shortly before they tied the knot in 2018.

According to the Mirror, the couple lived in the property while their official UK residence Frogmore Cottage was being renovated.

They officially moved out of the cottage last June after stepping down as senior royals in 2020.

Kate Middleton absent from new King Charles appointments

The Princess of Wales was notably absent from King Charles’s recent Order of the Garter appointments ahead of the Trooping the Colour.

According to reports, there have been long-standing calls for the future queen to be made a member of the institution – the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry.

The most notable appointment was that of the former director general of MI5, Baroness Manningham-Buller, who became the first-ever female chancellor of the Order of the Garter.

Kate’s attendance at this year’s Trooping the Colour ceremony has yet to be confirmed, as well as her potential attendance at Monday’s Garter Day ceremony.

Escaped military horse will have ‘most experienced rider’ at Trooping the Colour

08:12 , Emma Guinness

An escaped military horse who ran through London earlier this year will have the “most experienced rider” at Trooping the Colour to give the animal “extra confidence”.

This comes after the army revealed that three of the five spooked horses have recovered enough to return to work.

The army said that Tennyson will be ridden by Corporal of Horse Harvey to provide “extra confidence” for his role in the prestigious Sovereign’s Escort at the rear rank of the second division.

Meanwhile, Trojan and Vanquish will be a part of the ceremonial guard for the official entrance to the Royal Palaces, joining the King’s Life Guard at Horse Guards.

The other two escaped horses, Vida and Quaker, are continuing their recovery in the countryside.

Trooping the Colour: Everything we know about King’s birthday and whether Kate Middleton will attend

07:00 , Maroosha Muzaffar

Trooping the Colour is one of the most popular, glittering events in the royal calendar and it is taking place this Saturday (15 June).

Otherwise known as the King’s official birthday, it is a formal state ceremonial parade that sees the Monarch inspect the regiments of Household Division.

The eyes of the world will be on London this weekend because of the royal family’s ongoing health troubles, which saw King Charles take a step back from his duties earlier this year.

While the Monarch has now returned to a “reduced” summer schedule, he is continuing his cancer treatment alongside the Princess of Wales, who has not yet returned to duty.

The Princess of Wales has, however, hinted that she could appear with her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony this Saturday and reportedly said she is “considering” it should she feel well enough.

The eyes of the world will be on this year’s Trooping the Colour amid the royal family’s ongoing health troubles.

So far, only King Charles and Queen Camilla’s attendance has been officially confirmed, but sources have suggested that Kate Middleton is “considering” a surprise appearance.

While Prince William is expected to attend, it is not known if he will be joined by his young children without his wife, especially with Prince Louis’s reputation for making mischief at events.

Horses Tennyson, Trojan and Vanquish will take part in the King’s Birthday Parade after making “swift and successful” recoveries and showing “such aptitude and eagerness”, the Army said on Thursday.

ICYMI: King Charles’ new portrait covered in graffiti by activists at London gallery

05:00 , Maroosha Muzaffar

The first official portrait of King Charles III since his coronation has been covered in posters by activists at a London gallery.

Animal Rising campaigners plastered Wallace and Gromit-themed posters onto the new painting of the monarch, which is currently on public display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London, at around midday on Tuesday.

The group shared a video of two of its supporters pasting the face of the animated character Wallace over Charles’s on the red-hued painting by Jonathan Yeo. They also stuck on a speech bubble, which read in capitals: “No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!”

Alan Bates has received a knighthood in the King’s birthday honours list in recognition of the legal action he took against the Post Office over the Horizon IT system.

The former postmaster said he discovered he had received the honour while ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells at the Horizon IT inquiry.

The campaigner described his knighthood as “another string to my bow to help me go forward and get some finality for people”.

He previously turned down becoming an OBE while Vennells remained a CBE, but she rescinded the honour earlier this year.

Kate & The Queen: A Special Relationship is set to air on Channel 5 this Saturday and will detail how their relationship grew over time.

“The queen grew to trust Kate. I don’t think she really trusted anyone on first impression, we’re all performing the same show, the show is supporting the Queen,” claimed Daily Mail royal columnist Richard Kay.

“But with Kate and the Queen, it grew deeper than that, there was a real grandmotherly affection between the two.”

The insider told the Daily Beast: “I think this idea that Kate is suddenly going to pop up on the balcony on Saturday is far-fetched. It would be wonderful, of course, but more than slightly bizarre given that she bowed out of the Colonel’s Review.

“The royals typically have a light schedule over the summer months, so it would seem odd to make a big push for her to return now.”

Kate Middleton’s attendance at Wimbledon addressed

While Kate is their patron, their chair Deborah Jevans has today stressed that they will be putting no pressure on the princess to attend as she undergoes cancer treatment.

“Our priority is clearly that our Patron has the time to recover and we’re certainly not going to add any additional pressure on her recovery by speculating on her attendance at this year’s Championships,” Jevans said.

Charles and Camilla praised for patronage

Thursday 13 June 2024 08:07 , Emma Guinness

Queen Camilla and King Charles were simultaneously praised for the Monarch’s patronage of London’s Garden Museum.

The Queen Consort visited yesterday morning, joking that it was one patronage that she would like to “nudge” away from her husband.

While there, she was gifted a posy from Royal florist Shane Connolly.

“It’s lovely because they’re both gardeners so we’ve got the most amazing support – a patron who’s a gardener and his wife who comes to see us, so it’s absolutely fantastic” he said.

“They get what this is about, and gardening is for everyone, it’s not just for people who’ve got big estates, they realise that and this is a facility for people to come and see the therapy that a garden provides.”

Owen Haines of Car-y-Mor said the entire industry has the potential to create much-needed jobs in coastal areas.

“Coastal areas tend to be dominated by tourism and second homes, and the trouble with that is sooner or later the community collapses, as in, the doctor’s surgery closes, the school closes – no local can afford the housing,” Haines said.

“Whereas if you start businesses like this, you’ve got a chance to restart. This is an opportunity to start a new sector with land and sea farming, by producing bio-stimulants [from the seaweed] you can put on the fields.”

Harry and Meghan’s ‘contingency plan’ if Trump is re-elected

Wednesday 12 June 2024 08:17 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly making a “contingency plan” in the event of Donald Trump’s reelection in November.

The former president said that the Duke of Sussex, whose visa is currently being reviewed, would be treated like any other citizen if it emerges that he lied about his prior drug use on his application.

A source told New Idea: “The Sussexes are worried sick over the prospect of Donald Trump becoming president again – and making good on his vow to kick Prince Harry out of America.

“They’re putting together a contingency plan that would see them flee the country with their children [Archie and Lilibet] if Trump does return to office.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla have been given the green light by doctors to visit the Channel Islands on a whistle stop trip this summer.

The couple will visit the States of Jersey and Guernsey on the 15 and 16 of July in what is set to be the monarch’s second overseas trip since his cancer diagnosis in January.

Charles returned to public facing duties in April and has been met with a packed schedule. He visited Normandy, France, last week for D-Day commemorations and has also been seen on evenings out at the theatre and palace garden parties.

The King was all smiles with David Beckham as he celebrated the work of his foundation alongside other celebrity ambassadors including Sir Rod Stewart and Naomi Campbell.

Charles and former Manchester United midfielder Beckham were both seen laughing and heard discussing England’s chances in the Euro 2024 championships.

Referring to England’s loss to Iceland on Friday, Charles said: “What was all that at Wembley?”

Beckham replied: “I don’t think we should read much into it.”

Charles said: “It doesn’t really matter does it? It was a warming up sort of thing. You don’t want to expend it all in one go at the beginning.”

Reassuring the King, Beckham said “we’ll be ready, Gareth will be ready” to which Charles gave the former footballer a thumbs up.

Animal rights protestors wanted to get King Charles’s attention

Tuesday 11 June 2024 22:00 , Emma Guinness

The animal rights protestors who defaced the new portrait of King Charles have said they wanted to entertain the Monarch.

Animal Rising activist Dan Juniper said: “We know that King Charles is a big fan of Wallace and Gromit, [as] he has publicly said before.

“And so we wanted to get King Charles’s attention in a way that he would enjoy and therefore be more likely to listen to us.”

King Charles portrait unharmed by vandalism

Tuesday 11 June 2024 20:00 , Emma Guinness

The new portrait of King Charles is unharmed after it was targeted by animal rights protestors today.

Gallery owner Philip Mould explained that it was behind a piece of glass that protected the image of the King when the Monarch’s face was replaced with that of the animated character Wallace and a speech bubble was added.

“We had anticipated that there might be these type of responses,” Mould said of the portrait, which hangs in London’s Philip Mould Gallery.

“(The painting) is safely secured in its frame with protective layers.

“One always lives with that thought these days. I wasn’t hugely surprised.

“The attack on the picture was not actually of a serious nature. The perpetrators put water on the surface very quickly in a swift manoeuvre and then they added stickers to that.

“No damage was done. The stickers only remained up for about 10 or 15 seconds, and then were taken down by my gallery staff.

“I asked the individuals to leave and they did.”

RSPCA responds to vandalism of King Charles portrait

Tuesday 11 June 2024 18:00 , Emma Guinness

The RSPCA has responded to the vandalism of King Charles’s new portrait, which targeted the organisation.

Animal Rising supporters claim they defaced the image of the King at a London gallery to draw attention to the alleged plight of animals on RSPCA Assured farms.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We are shocked by this vandalism of His Majesty [the] King, our patron’s, portrait.

“We welcome scrutiny of our work, but we cannot condone illegal activity of any kind. Our staff and volunteers work extremely hard rescuing, caring for, and speaking up for animals.

“Animal Rising’s sustained activity is distracting from our focus on the work that really matters – helping thousands of animals every day.

“We remain confident that our RSPCA Assured scheme is the best way to help farmed animals right now, while campaigning to change their lives in the future.”
