A man has died after firing a ‘gun’ on a town centre street. Police say the man, in his 50s, suffered serious injures after discharging a firearm in Stafford on Friday evening (May 31).
Emergency services descended on Espleys Yard at around 6.20pm, after receiving calls for concern for the man’s welfare. Despite the best efforts of medics at the scene, he sadly died a short time later, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports.
Staffordshire Police says the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, due to previous contact with the force. The man’s next of kin has been informed and detectives do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the ‘tragic incident’.

Detective Inspector Louise Booker, who is investigating the incident at Staffordshire Police, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family in what is a tragic incident. We remain in regular contact with them and will be providing specialist support.”
Officers secured the scene and do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public. They are not looking for anyone else as part of the investigation.
There has been an increased police presence in the area following the incident to assist with the investigation and to provide reassurance to local residents. Enquiries are ongoing as police investigate the circumstances which led to the tragedy.
