The temperature is expected to reach as high as 31C this week as a yellow heat health alert is issued for most of England.
The wet weather that defined the first half of June has been replaced with soaring temperatures that could pose a risk to vulnerable people.
The Met Office said temperatures will climb steadily as the week progresses, with highs of 28C on Monday but up to 31C on Wednesday.
The yellow heat health alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), is in place across eight regions of England from 8am on Monday until 5pm on Thursday. Every area of England apart from the North East is included in the warning.
It means there is an increase in the risk of dying among vulnerable people and an increase use of healthcare services.
There is a chance the Met Office’s official criteria for a heatwave could be reached – UK heatwave threshold is met when a location records a period of “at least three consecutive days” with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.
The threshold ranges from 25C in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to 28C in London and parts of the south and south east of England.
On Tuesday, temperatures could peak at 30C in London, with a range of 25C to 28C elsewhere, the Met Office said.
On Wednesday, parts of the south east of England are forecast to reach 31C on what will be the warmest day of the week for many.
However, the Met Office said fresher conditions will arrive on Thursday through a cold front bringing cloud and showers, although it will still be very warm and sunny in the South East.
Those cooler conditions will be more widespread by Friday, with temperatures expected to be between 20C and 22C at the Glastonbury festival at the weekend.
Mark Sidaway, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will see temperatures which exceed the heatwave criteria. To be officially recognised as a heatwave though, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days.
“Although we are looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week does not look particularly exceptional or extreme.”
A hot week is expected in some places, with temperatures peaking on Wednesday or Thursday
