May 11, 2024

Tennis champion Novak Djokovic was hit in the head by a water bottle following a match at the Italian Open in Rome on the evening of Friday, May 10.

Footage filmed by Martin Delannay shows Djokovic stopping to sign autographs as he leaves the court. As he is doing so, he is hit in the head by a water bottle from the stands.

“Suddenly, we see a metal gourd fall on Djokovic’s head, who then remains prostrate on the ground for a few seconds before being evacuated”, Delannay told Storyful.

The tournament’s organisers later said that the episode was accidental and that Djokovic’s condition wasn’t a “cause for concern”.

Footage circulating on social media shows the water bottle falling from a man’s backpack as he was leaning down to try to get an autograph from Djokovic.
