More than a dozen police cars swarmed Ancoats in the early hours as a knife-wielding man was brought down. Video footage shows at least 15 marked Greater Manchester Police cars and vans on Old Mill Street, near New Islington marina, at around 5am today (June 2).

A number of unmarked cars were also in attendance. The video also appears to show several officers standing around a man who was detained on the ground.

Moments earlier, GMP had been called out to reports of a man carrying a large knife. It’s understood police stopped the man, who had been riding an electric bike dangerously while carrying the weapon.

The offender tried to resist arrest, causing officers to receive some minor injuries, the Manchester Evening News understands. It’s believed no officers were seriously injured.

A GMP spokesperson said: “At 4:43am we received reports of a man with a large knife. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, possession of an offensive weapon and assault of an emergency worker.”
