Planet Normal: Nigel Farage rules out stepping aside for Tories in general election

“I’ve had 25 years of doing them favours. 25 years of standing aside in elections for various Members of Parliament.”

On the latest Planet Normal podcast, which you can listen to using the audio player above, columnists Liam Halligan and Allison Pearson ask Nigel Farage if he will stand down candidates to help the Conservative Party win the election.

Recalling the 1992 election Mr Farage dismisses the idea there are ‘shy Tories’ who will not admit how they are voting, “Journalists and broadcasters have to believe there’s going to be a tightening of the polls, and it’s going to be really exciting. Folks, it isn’t. It’s done. And those people that have left the Conservatives are not going back. That’s what betrayal does.”

When asked if he would stand down candidates in marginal Tory seats, as they did in the 2019 election, Nigel is unequivocal in his answer, “No chance. What have they ever done for me? When it comes to it, it’s always Party first. None of them have the guts, frankly, to stand up and do what’s needed.

“I did it in ‘97, did it in ‘01, did it in ‘05 [and] did it in ten. Time and again, when I’ve been running parties either as chairman or leader we have not stood against the so-called ‘good guys’.

“They’re done, they’re toast. And they thoroughly deserve it, in my view.”
