Police officers raced to a man who was spotted walking in a live lane of the M6. Officers leapt into action amid concerns for the safety of both the pedestrian as well as drivers on the motorway.

The man was spotted walking near Junction 15 of the M6 in Staffordshire in a potentially perilous location. When they reached him, officers went over to speak to him and check on his welfare.

They were also keen to find out why he was walking on a motorway just inches away from cars and HGVs doing 70mph, and how he had ended up there. They surprised when he opened up about his story.

The man told them how he had crossed the Channel in a rubber dinghy and arrived at Dover before travelling north to the Midlands in a lorry. He had then ended up on the M6, and it’s unclear where he was aiming to get to.

The man was arrested by police and taken into custody. Sharing details of the incident, the Central Motorway Policing Group said on X: “Pedestrian located just north of J15 on the M6 walking in a live lane.

“The male indicated that he had entered the country in a rubber dinghy at Dover and then travelled north in a lorry. He’s been arrested and taken into custody where he’ll be processed by UK Border Force.”

The incident comes in a week of intense focus on Channel crossings after Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda bill was passed in Parliament. It forms a key part of his pledge to ‘stop the boats’ and send illegal immigrants to the African country.
