A district nurse is in a state of “total shock” after being assaulted by a cyclist on her drive home from work.

The 59-year-old victim, who does not want to be named, was driving down Aigburth Road on the afternoon of May 14, at around 2pm, when she drove past a cyclist. As she moved past him, the cyclist allegedly punched her wing mirror and began “hurling abuse”.

Speaking to the ECHO, the woman’s daughter said: “My mum pulled over near Sudley Primary School and opened the car door, planning to say ‘sorry if I got too close’. But she didn’t get the chance to explain.”

She added: “He pulled her out of the car and punched her in the face.”

According to the daughter, her mum, who wearing her nurse’s uniform at the time, was “screaming at the top of her lungs” as the attack happened. She also claims her mum was grabbed by the hair and shoved against the car.

Throughout the ordeal, the man, who is said to be aged around 70 with a white beard, reportedly hurled abuse at the nurse and repeatedly punched her car window, “as if he was trying to smash it in”. The daughter claims he only stopped when her mum pulled out her phone and told him she was going to call police.

After the assault, the victim was left with a swollen cheekbone. She went to a walk-in medical centre, where she was told to return for an x-ray if necessary.

While her injuries weren’t severe, according to her daughter, the psychological effect on her mum has been “devastating”. She said she was “shaking like a leaf” after the incident.

She added: “She’s scared to get back in the car now. She was terrified and in total shock. I’m just so angry that someone’s done that to my mum. To think she’s gone into a profession to help people and then something like this happens.”

Merseyside Police are appealing for information about the incident, and a spokesperson said enquiries are being carried out in the local area.

Community Inspector Jemma Shaw from Merseyside Police said: “This was a traumatic experience for the victim, and we are carrying out enquiries to identify the offender. Such violence like this on anyone is totally unacceptable and won’t be tolerated.

“We are carrying out enquiries in the area including obtaining CCTV footage that may have captured the incident. I would urge anyone who was in the area at around that time and witnessed the incident to please get in touch.

“I would also appeal to drivers and people with CCTV in the area who might have captured something on their dash cam and CCTV to come forward and speak to us.”

The cyclist is described as a white man in his 70s with a white beard and wearing dark cycling shorts, a blue and white cycling top and dark glasses.
