Royal news – live: Kate Middleton ‘turns corner’ in cancer treatment as Harry message defending Meghan removed

In Europe
May 29, 2024

Following reports that the Princess of Wales had been “out and about” with family in recent days as she continues her course of preventative chemotherapy, some speculation has turned to when Kate will return to official engagements.

Though some conflicting reports suggest Kate could return as early as autumn and as late as into the new year, the Palace and royal insiders have been keen to stress that no official comeback date has been planned.

However, according to Vanity Fair, the royal has recently “turned a corner” with her treatment and is feeling a lot better.

“It has been a great relief that she is tolerating the medication and is actually doing a lot better,” the publication reported. “It has, of course, been a very challenging and worrying time. Everyone has rallied around her—William, her parents, and her sister and brother.”

While Kate was understood to be the driving force behind last week’s landmark early years project, it is understood that Kate is in no hurry to return to work, and remains focused on recovering.

Meanwhile, the official website for the royal family no longer includes a 2016 statement Prince Harry released in defence of his then-girlfriend, Meghan Markle. Through his press secretary, Harry had accused the media of turning his relationship into a public spectacle.

Following the news that the King’s official birthday parade, the Trooping the Colour, will go ahead, a rehearsal is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The “khaki rehearsal” will see almost a thousand soldiers and 240 horses from the Household Division practice for the event in London.

The rehearsal will not be without an audience and around a thousand spectators are expected to watch so that all soldiers and horses have a chance to perform before the event on 15 June.

The Princess of Wales has reportedly “turned a corner” in her ongoing cancer battle.

Kate, who revealed her diagnosis in March, is now “tolerating the medicine” “a lot better” as she undergoes preventative chemotherapy, Vanity Fair reports.

“It has been a great relief that she is tolerating the medication and is actually doing a lot better,” the publication reported. “It has, of course, been a very challenging and worrying time. Everyone has rallied around her – William, her parents, and her sister and brother.”

Trooping the Colour to go ahead despite General Election

The Trooping the Colour, which marks the King’s official birthday, will go ahead despite the upcoming General Election, the army has confirmed.

There was some doubt surrounding the event, which will take place on 15 June, following the election announcement.

Buckingham Palace released a statement saying that all engagements “which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign” will be postponed.

However, the events were being reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and it was expected that the Trooping the Colour would still go head.

Prince William growing closer to King Charles amid cancer battle

08:00 , Emma Guinness

The royal family’s recent health troubles have reportedly brought Prince William and King Charles closer than ever.

According to an insider, this bond has been developed while William supports Kate Middleton through her own cancer battle.

The unidentified source told People magazine that the heir to the throne is “staying positive” for his family.

The news comes after it was revealed that Kate is “out and about more” as she has treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.

Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand could rake in seven figures in its first year

06:00 , Emma Guinness

Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand American Riveria Orchard could make seven figures in its first business year, it has been claimed.

The estimate was made by PR expert Mayah Riaz ahead of the brand’s official launch, with its official website and Instagram page still displaying none of its products.

Meghan has, however, sent out 50 limited edition jars of its jam to soft launch the brand, and Riaz believes they could retail for a staggering amount of money.

“So far, the jams have been sent to only 50 people. This suggests that it will be an exclusive and limited edition item,” Riaz told the Mirror.

“It has already been reported a single jam jar could cost three figures. I believe that is entirely likely from what we have seen so far. This is not rare for a celebrity brand.”

“Therefore, my estimation is that American Riveria Orchard in under a year could make Meghan seven figures. It is entirely possible for the brand to make multi-seven figures by the end of next year.”

Buckingham Palace issues powerful statement about Sycamore Gap seedling

04:00 , Emma Guinness

King Charles has been given the first seedling successfully cultivated from the felled Sycamore Gap tree.

Ahead of its replanting by the Monarch in Windsor, the palace released a powerful statement about the hope it represents for the future.

Buckingham Palace said: “Part of the power of trees to move and console us lies in the continuity and hope they represent: the sense that, rooted in the past and flourishing in the present, their seeds will be carried into an as yet unimaginable future.”

The seedling made its debut at the Chelsea Flower Show last week – eight months after the tree it came from was illegally felled.

Prince Harry could lose £12m mansion over US visa

02:00 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry could be forced to leave the US if it emerges that he lied on his US visa application.

It is currently under review following the Duke of Sussex’s revelations about past drug taking in his 2023 memoir Spare.

Should it emerge that he lied, Donald Trump said Harry will be treated like any other civilian if he is reelected in November.

The former president said: “We’ll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied they’ll have to take appropriate action.”

Harry currently lives in a nine-bedroom Montecito, California mansion worth £12m with his wife Meghan Markle and two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Royal photographer says Harry and Meghan’s wedding was ‘miserable’

Wednesday 29 May 2024 00:00 , Emma Guinness

A royal photographer has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding was “miserable”.

Reflecting on the sixth anniversary of the event, Arthur Edwards described the 2018 Windsor wedding as one of “the worst” royal events he has ever captured on camera.

The photographer claims that the couple were deliberately uncooperative because of Harry’s dislike of the British media.

“I was there I hated the day, it was a miserable day,” he told The Sun.

“I can tell you now it was the worst royal engagement I ever did, the worst royal wedding I ever did because Harry was determined to keep the newspapers away from it as much as possible.

“Everything was done on long lenses. It was hopeless. And when they went past in the carriage, they turned away from me.

“I felt it was deliberate, with the British press, in many ways, they were badly treated.

“Harry was angry at us about things said about Meghan.

“Some of the things were pretty harsh. Some were pretty unfair.

“He was angry and I felt we were punished for that.”

Meghan Markle’s ‘nakedness’ critiqued by First Lady of Nigeria

Tuesday 28 May 2024 22:00 , Emma Guinness

The First Lady of Nigeria has seemingly taken aim at Meghan Markle’s choice of clothing on her recent trip to the country.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu made the comments during a speech to mark President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office where she discussed the “nakedness” of “film stars from America”.

She said Nigerian women “do not want to mimic and try to emulate film stars from America” with their “nakedness”.

“The message here is we have to salvage our children. We see the way they dress,” she said.

“They keep forgetting that Nigeria, we are beautiful. You can see what they showcase on the stage, I said, ‘We are fashionable, we see what is going on.’

“We are not having the Met Gala. And everyone, the nakedness, is just everywhere and the men are well-clothed.

“So we have to do something. Tell them we don’t accept nakedness in our culture. That is not beautiful. It’s not beautiful at all.”

Major balcony change could take place at this year’s Trooping the Colour

Tuesday 28 May 2024 21:00 , Emma Guinness

A major change to the lineup on the Buckingham Palace balcony could happen at this year’s Trooping the Colour.

Traditionally, only working members of the royal family have been allowed on the balcony but less senior royals have recently supported the King and Prince William amid the family’s ongoing health troubles.

At William’s Buckingham Palace garden party, for example, he was supported by his cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie as well as Zara and Mike Tindall.

The Telegraph’s royal editor Hannah Furness speculated: “The Prince of Wales would be keen to extend similar invitations again, in the spirit of including the wider family, as his grandmother once did.

“The King, too, has seemed visibly buoyed by the company of his nieces and nephews, rarely looking happier than he did clasping Zara Tindall in a hug at the Royal Windsor Horse Show this month on his way back from cancer treatment.

“He must now decide what to do for this year’s Trooping the Colour, in which the state of the Royal family will be captured in that all-important ‘balcony moment’ displaying who is in and who is out.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be in ‘financial trouble’ next year

Tuesday 28 May 2024 19:00 , Emma Guinness

A royal expert has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could find themselves in “financial trouble” if their Netflix contract is not renewed next year.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes that the conclusion of the hit series The Crown could lead to less interest in the couple on the streaming platform.

“[Their contract] runs out next year and Netflix are no longer producing the series of The Crown, as they previously were. They might therefore have less interest in the Sussexes,” he told The Mirror.

“If they lost this contract, with Archewell, their business and charitable foundation, having so few donors, they might well be in financial trouble.”

The couple signed a five-year deal worth a reported $100 million with Netflix back in 2020.

Biden administration requests for Harry’s visa application to remain private

Tuesday 28 May 2024 17:00 , Emma Guinness

The Department of Homeland Security has requested for Prince Harry’s US visa application to remain private.

This comes after the application recently came under scrutiny following revelations about the Duke of Sussex’s prior drug use in his 2023 memoir Spare.

Lawyers for the Biden administration have said that there would be a “stigma attached” if the information entered the public domain.

The think tank group The Heritage Foundation requested that the documents be made public under a freedom of information application.

King ‘encouraged’ by lasting privacy of meeting with Harry

Tuesday 28 May 2024 14:40 , Athena Stavrou

The King has reportedly been “encouraged” by his February meeting with Prince Harry remaining private as the familial rift remains.

The duke cleared his schedule in February to fly across the Atlantic to see his father following his shock cancer diagnosis.

While the meeting lasted less than an hour, royal insider Robert Hardman believes it could have benefited their somewhat tumultuous relationship.

“But I think there can be a kind of normalising, and I thought it was telling that when the cancer diagnosis came through back in February, Prince Harry came straight over,” the author said.

“People said why didn’t he stay longer, why didn’t he talk to his father, I mean there is so much to be worked through, but this was absolutely not the moment to have some sort of summit with Harry about all of Harry’s grievances.

“But I think the fact he came was important, the fact he was received was important, I think what encouraged people at the palace and encouraged the king was the fact that afterwards, we didn’t then read about it or hear about it. It remained private.”

King ‘unhappy’ with distance from Harry

Tuesday 28 May 2024 14:00 , Athena Stavrou

King Charles is “unhappy” with the situation between himself and his son Prince Harry, an expert has said.

Royal author Robert Hardman said that the monarch finds the distance between the pair “unsettling” and would like to live in co-existence.

“Like any parent, yes, he definitely finds [the situation] unsettling, it makes him unhappy,” he said.

“There he is, he’s got two sons, one he hardly sees, and two grandchildren he’s barely ever seen and yes, I think he would like some sort of modus vivendi. Clearly they can’t come back to royal life. I don’t think they want to. After all that’s happened it wouldn’t work.”

Royal children ‘would not be exempt from National Service’

Tuesday 28 May 2024 13:37 , Emma Guinness

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis “would not be exempt from National Service”, it has been revealed.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced his radical plans to bring back National Service for 18-year-olds as part of the general election campaign and it has very limited exceptions.

The party confirmed to The Telegraph that the royal children will be expected to participate.

Sunak said: “National Service schemes in countries around the world show just how fulfilling it is for young people.

“We want to make sure Britain’s future generations can get the most out of National Service, that’s why we’re looking into ways it can open doors they wouldn’t otherwise get in work or education.

“Only the Conservatives will take the bold action required to deliver a secure future for the next generation.”

Prince Harry could release second book, insider says

Tuesday 28 May 2024 13:19 , Athena Stavrou

Royal author Robert Hardman has said that Prince Harry may release a second book, further wounding his brother Prince William.

“The problem that exists is at the moment, there is still a trust issue. People are still very wounded, particularly Prince William, that these intimate private childhood family moments all spilled out in Harry’s book,” he said.

“They’re not particularly negative, I think Charles comes out of the book pretty well, William comes out of it very well, even Queen Camilla comes out of it OK. It’s not what Harry said, it’s the fact that he said it, and he gave away so many secrets. And he was effectively at the time of the Queen’s death, you know, he was taking notes.

“And if you do read that book, and as I said it’s amazing, but if you get to the bit about his wedding to Meghan, it boils down really to about 4 or 5 pages. Now as an author that says to me one thing and one thing only: part two might be on its way.”

King Charles supports firefighters with new patronage

Tuesday 28 May 2024 11:43 , Emma Guinness

King Charles has become the new patron of The Fire Fighters Charity following a review of patronages by the Royal Household.

The role was previously held by Queen Elizabeth from 1953 until her death in 2022.

Sherine Wheeler, chief executive of The Fire Fighters Charity, said: “The patronage of the late Queen, over almost seven decades, reflected the high regard in which our fire and rescue services – and those who work for them – are held by the Royal Household.

“So, I am delighted that we can continue to honour this legacy under the patronage of His Majesty The King.

“We extend our deep gratitude to him for his continued support and dedication to our work to ensure all those in the fire and rescue services community live healthy and happy lives.”

ICYMI: Prince Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation no longer listed as ‘delinquent’

Tuesday 28 May 2024 05:30 , Maroosha Muzaffar

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation is no longer listed as “delinquent” by California’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers.

On Monday the charity was listed as “delinquent” and a delinquency notice letter was sent to the foundation on May 3 for “failing to submit required annual report(s) and/or renewal fees”, but on Tuesday the status of Archewell Foundation had been changed to “current”.

The letter had warned that an organisation listed as delinquent is banned from “soliciting or disbursing charitable funds” and “its registration may be suspended or revoked by the registry”.

On Tuesday, a statement from California’s Department of Justice said the Archewell Foundation is “current and in good standing”.

A spokesperson for California’s Department of Justice said: “After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organisation is current and in good standing.”

King to plant sapling from felled Sycamore Gap tree in Windsor Great Park

Tuesday 28 May 2024 05:10 , Maroosha Muzaffar

King Charles is set to have a sapling from the Sycamore Gap Tree planted in a royal park, eight months after the iconic tree was felled.

On Monday, the monarch was presented with the first seedling grown from seeds collected from the tree – which stood next to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland for 200 years – when it was cut down in September.

Once the seedling has matured into a sapling, Charles will have it planted in Windsor Great Park for visitors to enjoy as a symbol of the hope and beauty that can come from loss, the National Trust said.

There was an outcry when the tree was felled last year in an act of vandalism, with Northumberland National Park saying it had received 2,000 “heartfelt” messages from people from all around the world expressing sorrow.

Historic England said Hadrian’s Wall had also suffered damage during the felling.

Kate, 41, did so on Mental Health Awareness Week in a joint post with the Prince of Wales highlighting the psychological struggles young farmers can face.

The couple wrote on X (Twitter) via the Kensington Royal account: “This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we’ve brought together the inspirational Sam Stables from We Are Farming Minds and the brilliant Farmer Will for a very special film.

“Spending a day together on Sam’s farm in Hereford they chatted about mental health in the farming community, finding support and the Duchy of Cornwall’s Mental Health Strategy.”

King receives first Sycamore Gap tree seedling nearly eight months after felling

The King has been presented with the first seedling grown from seeds collected from the Sycamore Gap tree, nearly eight months after the historic tree was felled in an act of vandalism.

Biden administration ask US court to keep Prince Harry visa documents private

Monday 27 May 2024 09:58 , Athena Stavrou

The Biden administration has asked a US court to keep Prince Harry’s visa application private amid concerns over his prior drug use.

The Telegraph reported that US lawyers for the Department of Homeland Security pleaded with the courts in February over requests from the conservative Heritage Foundation for the details of Harry’s application to be made public.

The dispute was sparked after the prince admitted in his memoir, Spare, that he had taken cocaine, marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms previously.

“Many of these records, your honour, are law enforcement records,” the department’s lawyer said. “So there is a stigma associated with being mentioned in a law enforcement record.”

He added that publishing the files would expose “confidential law enforcement tools”.

He continued: “The government has cited multiple cases in its brief about the private nature of immigration records and about the fact that people who are public figures still maintain their privacy interests.”
