Sir Jim Ratcliffe announces major Manchester United ‘change’ ahead of FA Cup final

Manchester United staff are reportedly incensed by a decision from INEOS to cut back on the club’s perks for the forthcoming FA Cup final next month.

The Reds are set to face local rivals Manchester City at the iconic Wembley Stadium on May 25, in a bid to conclude the season with some silverware. In previous FA Cup finals, including last year’s 2-1 defeat to City, all 1,100 employees of United were given complimentary tickets, while senior staff and directors could invite friends and family.

For some high-ranking staff, not only would they receive a free ticket, but travel to and from Wembley was arranged, as well as a pre-match party, a post-match lunch and hotel accommodation in London – all at no cost. However, this will not be the case for the upcoming final, with INEOS boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe implementing changes.

According to The Times, club staff received an email informing them that they would receive a free ticket to the game and nothing more. All other benefits – even for the senior staff members and directors – have been axed under Ratcliffe’s supervision.

United employees have been informed they must pay £20 for coach travel to and from Wembley, while a one-way ticket will cost them £10. Some within the club perceive this as cost-cutting measures from Ratcliffe, who acquired his stake in the Red Devils just before the start of the year.

One of the key concerns Ratcliffe has identified since his involvement with Manchester United is the club’s spending. The British tycoon is adamant about keeping United within the boundaries of profit and sustainability.

An alleged email quoted by The Times reads: “There is still hard work ahead over the coming weeks, but I know everyone at the club is completely focused on delivering the performances and results expected of Manchester United and finding ways to win in whatever role you do

“In recognition of your ongoing support this season, we will organise a colleague trip to Wembley for the final on 25 May. This year, the trip will be a little different. We will still provide you with a complimentary ticket to the game. However, we’ll ask you to contribute towards coach travel, and lunch will not be provided.

“While we appreciate this is a change from previous trips, you will all be aware of the need for us to spend the club’s money effectively, with a focus on performance and outcomes.

“We hope that this year’s trip balances the opportunity for you to go to Wembley to support our players while also ensuring we can invest as much as possible into the club over the coming months to achieve our goal of returning Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football.”
