The UK’s fleeting heatwave is set to be disrupted by a series of thunderstorms that could trigger asthma, according to the Met Office.

The warm and settled weather is predicted to give way later this weekend, with thunderstorms expected in some regions from Sunday. Despite parts of the UK seeing highs of 27C, the Met Office has issued two yellow thunderstorm warnings for Sunday.

These cover a large portion of England and Wales from midday until 9pm, and parts of Northern Ireland from 11am until 7pm. This will be followed by heavy showers and thunder throughout the remainder of May with periods of rain anticipated to last up to two weeks.

The Met Office has cautioned that the forthcoming thunderstorms can sometimes trigger asthma and induce asthma attacks, with symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing and coughing exacerbated by the wind. Asthma and Lung UK have advised Brits with asthma on how to protect themselves, reports the Mirror.

As the UK finds itself in the middle of a mini heatwave, temperatures are forecasted to reach 27C this weekend – hotter than the Mediterranean party island of Ibiza. Those hoping to enjoy the sun in the upcoming weeks may now face a downpour, with unpredictable temperatures on the horizon.

The Met Office has forecasted heavy showers for many parts of Britain, including London, Southampton, Birmingham, Plymouth, and Cardiff on Sunday. However, the rain is set to move northwards the following day, affecting Manchester, Newcastle and parts of Scotland.

Weather maps indicate that the rainy spells are not expected to cease until May 25 suggesting a fortnight of wet weather for many parts of the UK.

During this period, temperatures are predicted to vary. The Met Office has warned of “low pressure” bringing “unsettled conditions” throughout the remainder of May.

However, according to the forecaster, East Anglia, London and the Midlands will experience the best of the weather this weekend. Temperatures in these areas are set to peak at 25C on Sunday, while in the north, Liverpool, Glasgow and Newcastle could see highs of around 22C, as per the charts.

This weekend’s forecast suggests that the majority of Brits will enjoy “fine and dry” weather. For the period between Friday, May 10 and Sunday, May 19, “there is a strong signal for high pressure across the UK at the start of this period, bringing a good deal of fine and dry weather for most areas, though with patchy mist and fog in places each morning.”

The forecast continues: “Northwestern parts of the UK are likely to be the exception to this, with more in the way of cloud and rain at times here. The high is likely to maintain its influence into the weekend before starting to weaken during the following week.”
