Unemployment claims in Colorado increased last week

Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Colorado rose the week of May 19 compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said last Thursday.

New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, increased to 2,896 in the week ending May 25, up from 2,689 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. unemployment claims rose to 219,000 last week, up 3,000 claims from 216,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis.

North Dakota saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 91.4%. New Hampshire, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims dropping by 21.9%.
