Heartwarming Video Shows Young Boy Discovering Liver Donor Is Former Preschool Teacher
A young boy in western New York was happy to hear news that he was matched with a liver donor – who turned out to be his former preschool teacher, footage filmed in late May shows.Video filmed and posted to Facebook by Karen Toczek, who said she captured it at their home in Alden, in Erie County, shows her 5-year-old son Ezra being surprised with the news on May 25.According to a local report, Ezra suffered liver damage at birth and had “end-stage liver disease” – meaning his liver was failing.Back in January, Ezra and his mother traveled to New York City, where doctors determined he was in desperate need of a liver transplant and placed on the transplant list a month later.Carissa Fisher, Ezra’s former preschool teacher, learned of his condition and put in an application to become a living donor in March. Shortly after, she traveled to New York City for the required testing and received the news that she had been approved on May 24.“We had no idea that Ezra’s former preschool teacher had applied to be a living donor, and she waited to surprise us when she was sure she was approved!” Toczek told Storyful.Fisher “is a perfect match and was approved to donate [part of] her liver,” she added.According to the report, Ezra’s family hopes the liver transplant will be scheduled for later this summer and a GoFundMe page was setup to help with the costs.
