Four months after Selena Gomez revealed her relationship with Benny Blanco, the 36-year-old cookbook author and record producer is opening up about their love story—at least, his side of it.
In his new Wall Street Journal cover story, Blanco revealed that he fell for Gomez after reuniting with the 31-year-old pop star in the recording studio. While the pair collaborated on his 2019 music video for “I Can’t Get Enough,” they didn’t work together again until “Single Soon,” which was released in August 2023.
“I was the last one to know,” Blanco said of his feelings for Gomez. “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like, Wait, I’m in love.”
Of course, he wasn’t really the last to know. Gomez and Blanco had been secretly dating for six months before going public with their relationship in December 2023. At the time, the 31-year-old pop star confirmed the rumors on Instagram, telling fans that her fellow musical foodie was “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“He is my absolute everything in my heart,” Gomez shared.
Despite (or, perhaps, because of) their rampant PDA and public date nights since the announcement, many of Gomez’s fans still haven’t warmed up to the idea of the Rare Beauty mogul dating the chef with a penchant for going toes out at basketball games.
It appears that some fans are not over some unfavorable remarks he made back in 2020 while praising his “Lonely” collaborator Justin Bieber on The Zach Sang Show. “Justin is not one of those, like, cookie-cutter pop artists,” he said at the time. “You know they’re, like, ‘This is my new single and here’s my makeup line.’”
When one fan reminded Gomez that Blanco had been “shading you years ago,” she replied, “yeah and he’s still better than anyone I’ve ever been with. Facts.”
During his interview with WSJ, Benny Blanco said he doesn’t read the comments about him on social media. Instead, he seems to be focusing all his energy on his upcoming book tour for Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends. He told writer Lane Florsheim that he’s excited to introduce Gomez to a spot in New York called The Grill because she “loves a good martini.”
The pair cook together a lot, Blanco also revealed, telling the WSJ that they once served her corn casserole alongside his corn bread with honey butter recipe while hosting a steakhouse dinner for their families. “I just love entertaining and pleasing people,” he said. “Doesn’t everyone want to be cared for, whether it’s your friend or a lover or your family? Doesn’t it feel good when someone makes you something?”
