In Europe
April 21, 2024

Residents of the Canary Islands took to the streets on Saturday, April 20, rallying against the surge of mass tourism under the banner “Canarias has a limit,” as they demanded stricter regulations within the sector.

The rally, convened across the islands by the platform “Canarias Se Agota” (Canary Islands is exhausted), called for a moratorium on authorizing new hotels and vacation homes, implementation of an eco-tax, and regulation of housing purchases by foreigners.

The Canary government reported 56,000 attendees, while the organising platform claimed 130,000 in Tenerife and Gran Canaria alone.
