Not content with going up against the general public, the BBC‘s new batch of lycra-clad athletes will soon go up against some famous faces in a Gladiators celebrity spin-off special.
The first season of this new take on a 1990s ITV classic started in January 2024 and introduced audiences to 16 brand new Gladiators, each of which were put through their paces by some amateur contenders.

The end of each challenge saw both the Gladiators and their home-trained challengers take on the dreaded Eliminator, an infamous assault course designed to test their strength and stamina. The end result was a huge success for the BBC, with millions tuning in to see who came out on top at the end of each episode.
Now a Gladiators celebrity spin-off is on the way – but what do we know about it?
When will the Gladiators celebrity special be released?
The Gladiators celebrity spin-off does not yet have a release date. However, with the first series only wrapping in March 2024, it’s likely that we won’t see the Gladiators celebrity special until the end of the year at the very earliest.
In April 2024, Dan Baldwin, the show’s executive producer, revealed that a celebrity edition was in the works, along with a second series of the main show.
“I can reveal we are going to do a celebrity special…” Baldwin told BBC Radio 4. “I think Gladiators is here to stay, I’m going to say, it’s here to stay.”
Who is starring in the Gladiators celebrity special?
The full line-up for the Gladiators celebrity spin-off has yet to be revealed. However, considering the show’s runaway success with viewers, it really is anyone’s guess as to which big name stars could appear.
“We wanted it to be event television so we had to get an audience of 3,000 people every episode,” said Baldwin during his chat with BBC Radio 4.
“The first episode we had almost 10,000 turn up. So at that point, we knew that we had something… But so many people catch up on it and it’s gone from strength to strength and we’re really happy with how it’s gone.”
Who will host the Gladiators celebrity special?
Gladiators, which is filmed in Sheffield and airs on BBC One on Saturday evenings, is hosted by father and son duo Bradley and Barney Walsh.
While the duo has become a quick hit with audiences, it’s unclear whether they’ll return to front the show’s second series or this recently announced celebrity special.
That said, considering the success of the show, it’d be a surprise if the Walshes don’t return.
