Pep Guardiola confirms Man City injury that could be blow in title race with Liverpool

Pep Guardiola has confirmed an Erling Haaland injury blow for Manchester City and given an update on a possible return date for the Norwegian forward. Even without Haaland, Manchester City beat Chelsea at Wembley to book its place in the FA Cup final.

Haaland asked to be taken off during Manchester City’s midweek Champions League defeat against Real Madrid. And having already missed one match, he could miss Thursday’s trip to Brighton in the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of the first FA Cup semi-final, Guardiola confirmed that Haaland is injured but did not specify the nature of the problem. “He’s injured,” Guardiola stated. “I don’t think it’s much but he’s not able for today. I don’t know [if he will be back for the next game].”

Haaland’s absence would be a big blow for Manchester City, who are looking to win the FA Cup for the second year in a row. The striker has been in sensational form this season, scoring 39 goals in all competitions. Kevin De Bruyne also came off midweek but played a key part in the game at Wembley today meaning he has now fully recovered.

Manchester City is striving to make history by becoming the first team in English football to clinch the top flight title four times in a row, but it only has a slight lead over its rivals. Guardiola is also hoping to secure his third FA Cup victory, having previously won in 2019 and 2023.

Liverpool has a trip to Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday while Arsenal is at Wolves today. Both could be ahead of Manchester City by the time Guardiola’s side plays in the league again. After Fulham, Liverpool plays again on Wednesday meaning it could be four points clear of Manchester City before the Etihad side plays again, though it would have two games in hand.

Liverpool.com says: The Reds simply have to win each of their six remaining matches and hope for the best. Even without Haaland potentially on Thursday, Guardiola will have Julián Álvarez playing instead. That is not a bad back-up option.
