Facebook EMEA Director Louis Holmes announced last week that the Facebook Diverse Voices Programme has been launched in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to support creators from underrepresented communities. From this program, creators can scale their creativity, grow their community, and build a unique presence across our family of apps.
Diversity and inclusion at Facebook are not an option “this is a must-have.” The company has made some decent progress in diversity & inclusion in the past few years and are building progress as the year passes. The company hires highly qualified people from underrepresented groups of people that assist the company to get benefits from their talent.
What is a Facebook Diverse Voices Programme?
The “diversity” in Facebook & Instagram is increasing & when we look at the Chief Diversity officer ‘Maxine William’ we can categorically say that under her leadership, the company has played a significant role in uplifting the underrepresented community. Diversity comes in many different forms; LGBTQ+ community and someone that comes from an ethnic or cultural minority. To give voices to the people and the communities, An initiative launched by Facebook to support the creators from an underrepresented community, creators can showcase their skills & better represent their communities on the Facebook family of apps.
Those who come from an ethnic or cultural minority are known as an underrepresented community. This program will help people & the community to expand their existence on the platform & it will bring some good changes such as,
- Better reputation among people
- A better understanding of your clients
- Increases in employment & an easier recruitment
- It will reduce Discriminations & Racism
- It will increase productivity & creativity
What is the role of social media?
The social media companies stand together with the communities and those who were and are affected by racism. The giant social media companies such as Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Twitter have started Diversity and Inclusion long ago. The program supports affected people, minorities, and communities and, that’s what Facebook says, increasing voices, diverse thoughts, and perspectives are our main motto. All social media platforms have a Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. Their job is to develop strategies for the company, launch programs that benefit the community, hire the underrepresented groups of people, provide community education programs, build products, and develop policies.
Facebook & Instagram are two top social media platforms that impressed me a lot on Diversity & Inclusion because of the transparency. Last year Facebook spent $100 million to support the news industry during the COVID-19 pandemic through the diversity program. Facebook & Instagram have improved themselves in ‘Racial Equity’ which, means the company has been given equal opportunities to people of all races without any discrimination.
There is a significant growth in hiring people with different backgrounds and experiences, which means the company has been given opportunities to those who had been faced Racial Injustice in the workplace. According to the 2020 Facebook diversity report, the company’s representation of women, Black, and Hispanic people increased. Facebook is one of the companies that have big plans for “Diversity & Inclusion” for 2024. The Facebook goal is to hire 50 percent of its employees from underrepresented communities, including Women, Black People, Hispanics, Asian Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, people with two or more Ethnicities, Veterans, and People with Disabilities by 2024.
