Not only is sex treated as the ultimate goal for the T-Birds, it seems like it’s something the boys are desperate to have, and are determined to get through any means necessary. In the beloved song ‘Summer Nights’, after bragging about how he saved Sandy’s life, one of the lads asks Danny, “did she put up a fight?” alluding to the fact that he potentially violated her. Worse still, in the drive-in scene later in the film, Danny forces himself onto Sandy. When the uncomfortable girl makes it clear she doesn’t consent, the young man simply replies, “nobody is watching”.
