Harry Redknapp has compared Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard after his wonder strike against Sheffield United last week.

The Argentine has been a key player in midfield for Jurgen Klopp‘s side this season since arriving last summer from Brighton. He will player under a new manager next term with Klopp leaving Anfield.

Mac Allister has made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Reds so far in 2023/24 having mainly been used in defensive midfield by Klopp. His importance was again highlighted during the fixture against the relegation-struggling Blades when Chris Wilder’s side equalised and defended resolutely for much of the second half at Anfield. The 25-year-old’s strike put the Reds 2-1 ahead with his moment of brilliance compared to those produced by the club’s talismanic former captain Gerrard.

And former Tottenham manager Redknapp has heaped praise on Liverpool’s midfielder. He believes his performances for Klopp’s team have not got the recognition they deserve this season.

“Alexis Mac Allister has been outstanding recently – he’s been as good as anyone in the league,” Redknapp told Betvictor after including him in his team of the week.

“That goal against Sheffield United during the week was like a vintage Steven Gerrard strike! I know the lad is a World Cup winner, but I don’t think people realise just how good he is.”

Mac Allister was recently asked to compare his goal against the Blades to the wonder strike he scored against Fulham, addressing claims that his volley against the Cottagers had a stroke of luck about it.

“I don’t know [which goal was better],” he said. “We were discussing that. Both of them were very good but the most important thing is that it helped to win the game. Against Fulham they told me it was lucky so I had to prove them wrong.”
