The eastern United States is likely to face a massive cicada invasion this year. Two large populations of “periodical cicadas” will hatch almost simultaneously. The insects spend around 13 to 17 years as larvae in the soil before coming to the surface to mate. The last time the population hatching coincided was over 200 years ago.
