Nicola Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell, the former Scottish National Party chief executive, has been re-arrested as part of an investigation into the party’s finances.

Mr Murrell had previously been arrested last April in connection with the investigation into the funding and finances of the SNP.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 59-year-old man has today, Thursday April 18 2024, been re-arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.

“The man, who was previously arrested as a suspect on April 5 2023, was taken into custody at 9.13am and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives.

“The matter remains active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981, and the public are therefore advised to exercise caution if discussing it on social media. For this reason, Police Scotland has turned off the comments function on this post.

“As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

Ms Sturgeon and Colin Beattie, the SNP’s former treasurer, were also arrested last year at a later date than Mr Murrell.

All three were released without charge pending further investigations, and Ms Sturgeon has strenuously denied any wrongdoing.

Since July 2021, Police Scotland has been examining the SNP’s handling of more than £600,000 in donations raised in 2017 for a second independence referendum.

Supporters complained when accounts lodged with Companies House in 2020 showed the SNP only had £97,000 in the bank despite the second referendum never having taken place, raising questions about the money.

The total cost of Operation Branchform, the investigation into SNP funding, has cost taxpayers more than £1 million.

This is a breaking story. More follows.
