From public school teachers to correctional officers to judges, more than 58,000 people received at least one paycheck from the State of Delaware last year.
The total payout, including overtime and other earnings, was nearly $2.64 million, according to data requested and analyzed by the News Journal/Delaware Online. State employee wages account for less than 1% of the state’s total operating budget.
But who earned the most, and what form did those earnings take?
For 11% of state employees, at least half of their annual earnings came from overtime and other bonuses, with Department of Correction and state police employees earning the most in overtime on average. Not all state employees are eligible for overtime hours.
The top earners of overtime among state employees worked with state police, the Delaware Psychiatric Center and the Department of Correction, according to the data. All but one of the 10 state employees who earned the most in overtime hours received more pay from overtime than from their regular earnings.
The Department of Transportation paid its employees the least on average, though many did not work with the department full-time.
