The referee in Arsenal’s Champions League draw with Bayern Munich, Glenn Nyberg, confirmed that VAR checked Bukayo Saka’s penalty claim in injury-time.

Frustrations flared within the Gunners’ ranks when Bukayo Saka appeared to be toppled by Manuel Neuer late into their quarter-final first leg, but Nyberg denied them the chance for a spot-kick.

Despite the vigorous disputing from the Arsenal team, the Swedish official held his ground, confirming that VAR has “checked” the incident.

Saka nabbed the lead for Arsenal in the brief span of the 12th minute, capitalising on the lack of Bayern support due to travel restrictions put on their fans to North London’s Emirates stadium.

However, ex-Gunner Serge Gnabry retaliated, equalling the scoreline just six minutes afterwards and Tottenham hero Harry Kane handed the Bundesliga giants the lead.

England’s star player netted from the penalty spot, outmanoeuvring David Raya, and handed his team the advantage which persisted till the second half. Arsenal, resilient as ever, managed to level the scores thanks to supersub Leonadro Trossard who stormed off the bench.

The game could have tipped in favour of Arsenal when Saka was taken down by Neuer in the final minutes, creating the impression of a last-gasp opportunity for a winning shot.

However, the Gunners will have to bide their time until the second leg at the Allianz Arena to gain an upper hand in this quarter-final tie.
