Shia LaBeouf, who’s been marred in controversy in recent years, has been received into the Catholic Church and is reportedly considering becoming a deacon.

The Transformers actor, 37, “fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation!” the Capuchin Fransiscans — Western America Province announced on Tuesday.

“The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey,” the group wrote in a caption to their Instagram post. The post itself shows three photos of the actor posing with priests and friars.

“Shia LaBeouf, known for his incredible talent and passion in the entertainment industry, has embarked on a profound spiritual journey that has led him to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church,” the group wrote. “His decision to fully enter the Church is a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values.”

The Catholic News Agency reported that LaBeouf’s confirmation took place Sunday at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California. The actor’s confirmation sponsor also told the outlet that LaBeouf has stated he intends to take a job as a deacon in the church “sometime in the future.”

A representative for LaBeouf did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment Thursday.

Capuchin friar Brother Alexander Rodriguez, who served as LaBeouf’s confirmation sponsor, told CNA that LaBeouf has been contemplating becoming a deacon since he made his 2022 movie Padre Pio. LaBeouf played 20th century Italian priest Francesco Forgione in that movie and spent time at that California parish preparing for the role, per CNA.

“He just spontaneously said, ‘I want to become a deacon,’ and he still feels that way,” Rodriguez told the outlet.

LaBeouf previously spoke to his growing interest in Catholicism during an August 2022 interview with the Catholic bishop Robert Barron. He cited the friar Rodriguez and other members of the church in California with helping him find an interest in the church’s teachings while he prepared for his role in Padre Pio.

“If you like immersive experiences and you get tasked with playing Pio, your life is going to change,” LaBeouf said about how the role affected him during that interview.

Back in 2014, LaBeouf told Interview magazine that he immersed himself in Christianity while making his 2014 movie Fury, in which he played an American World War II soldier.

“I found God doing Fury. I became a Christian man, and not in a f—— bulls— way — in a very real way,” he said at the time. “I could have just said the prayers that were on the page. But it was a real thing that really saved me.”

Padre Pio was LaBeouf’s last movie role. He is set to appear in three upcoming movies, including Francis Ford Coppola‘s upcoming film Megalopolis.
