A Small Heath shop which allegedly ’caused significant distress’ in the area has been shut down and its owners fined £2,400. West Midlands Police shut down Hayat Convenience Store after being granted a court closure order.

The force said the Coventry Road business was the centre of “anti-social behaviour”. PC Ellis Hancock, from Washwood Heath’s neighbourhood team, said the shop was “a source of significant distress for many” in the community.

She added: “We received numerous complaints regarding anti-social behaviour. In response, we worked alongside our partners, including trading standards, to take decisive action.

“We’re pleased to report that a closure order was successfully obtained through the courts. Our hope is that this will significantly improve the quality of life for residents who have been negatively impacted by the anti-social behaviour originating from this property.”

The owners of the business were fined court costs totalling £2,400 after police applied for the closure order. The order was granted at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (May 3).
